By train to Watford Junction:
Watford Junction station is served by London Midland and Virgin trains on the West Coast mainline, from London Euston, the London Overground suburban service, and the Abbey Flyer branch line from St Albans Abbey station.
On arriving at Watford Junction, it is possible to get the Abbey Flyer service to Watford North station (see directions, below) from platform 11. The journey time is a few minutes, but trains are infrequent, so please check the times of your connection.
Alternatively, leave the station and turn left to reach the bus station alongside Watford Junction railway station, and complete your journey by bus.
It is possible to walk to North Watford Library from Watford Junction station, but this is a long distance (> 1 mile). If you wish to do this, turn right on leaving the station, towards the Flag public house, and cross the service road leading to the station car park. Turn right along this road, towards the car park. Before reaching the bridge, there is a ramp that leads up and to left, to a footpath that runs parallel to the rail lines. Follow this footpath to St Albans Road. Ascend the steps to St Albans Road, turn right onto the bridge over the railway lines, and follow St Albans Road.
By train to Watford North:
Watford North station is on the branch line between Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey stations. The Abbey Flyer services are operated by London Midland.
On leaving the station, walk to the nearest bus top on the same side of the Bushey Mill Lane, and board a bus towards Watford Town Centre. At the junction of Bushey Mill Lane and St Albans Road alight from the bus, and walk back along St Albans Road, away from the town centre. You will need to cross Bushey Mill Lane and the Asda exit road before reaching the library.
Alternatively, leave Watford North station, turn left to cross the railway lines, and follow Bushey Mill Lane to the junction with St Albans Road. The walk is not far (about 10 minutes), but it is uphill in places, so may not be suitable for those who have difficulty walking.
Routes 1A, 5, 6, 6A, 6B, 8, 30, 320, 321, 621, 632, 724, 815 and W6 call at the bus stops outside the library, or on the opposite side of the road. Please note that some of these services operate a restricted timetable, so do check that your required bus is running both to and from the library.
Earlier this year, the last British soldier to see active service in the Great War passed away. This reminded many people of the losses suffered as a result of that and other conflicts. The month of November, and Rememberance Day especially, is traditionally the time when thoughts turn to the sacrifices made by those who fought to preserve freedom.
During November, North Watford History Group will be providing a display on the theme of "North Watford during the Wars" at North Watford Library. This display will be in the library foyer.
For those who have a long journey to make, you may wish to combine your visit with other reasons for being in the area, due to the limited scale of the display. It will be at the library for the entire month, so there is plenty of opportunity to view it. You may also want to attend the Reminiscence Morning on 21 November, at Leavesden Road Baptist Church.
